Why we celebrate Waitangi Day:

Waitangi day [named after, Waitangi, where the Treaty of Waitangi was first singed] commemorates a significant day in history of new Zealand. it is observed as a public holiday each year on 6 February to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, new Zealand's founding document, on that date in 1840.

what is the Treaty of Waitangi:

the Treaty of Waitangi is the founding document of new Zealand. it is an agreement entered into by representatives of the Crown and of Māori iwi (tribes) and hapū (sub-tribes). It is named after the place in the Bay of Islands where the Treaty was first singed, on 6 February 1840
